How we test
Every product is used on a real trip before it is scored. Here is what that involves and how to read the number.
Tested on the road
The Packroute Test Desk packs, books or flies with each product the way a traveller would: luggage goes through gates and overhead bins, booking platforms are used to book, eSIMs are activated on arrival, and policies are read to the last exclusion.
We compare what happened with what the maker promises. Where a claim cannot be checked on a trip, the review says so instead of repeating it.
What we judge in each category
- Carry-On Luggage
- Hardside and softside suitcases sized to fit airline carry-on limits, judged on durability, wheel quality, and how much they actually hold.
- eSIM & Connectivity
- Prepaid data eSIMs that replace roaming and local SIM cards, judged on coverage, real-world speed, and how easily they activate at the airport.
- Packing Accessories
- Packing cubes, chargers, and trackers that keep a trip organized, judged on how much space and hassle they save over a full itinerary.
- Travel Backpacks
- Convertible packs and duffels built for carry-on travel without wheels, judged on comfort, organization, and how they handle a full week of hauling.
- Travel Insurance
- Policies that cover trip cancellation, medical emergencies, and delays abroad, judged on claim payouts, coverage limits, and how fast help actually arrives.
- Travel Tech Gadgets
- Cameras and safety devices travelers carry for content and peace of mind, judged on battery life, footage or signal quality, and everyday portability.
- Trip Planning Platforms
- Booking sites and apps travelers use to find flights, stays, and fares, judged on price accuracy, ease of booking, and real customer support.
Reading the score
Scores run from 0 to 10 with one decimal, on one scale for every category.
- 8.0 and above: earns a spot in the bag. We would take it on our own next trip.
- 6.0 to 7.9: pack it with caveats. Good for some trips, and the review says which.
- Below 6.0: leave it at home. It failed at something that matters on the road.
Each review also names who the product is best for, lists what worked and what did not, and quotes the maker's own specs and price.
Updates and corrections
Prices, plans and policy terms change. When we learn that a review is out of date or wrong, we update it, show the new date under the title, and add a correction note when a fact was wrong. Tell us about an error through the contact page.
